Immediately, the young woman Jasmine began to seize violently. In her hurry, Julie accidentally got the wrong type of epidural. Unfortunately the young mother Jasmine quickly died and the child was born with the help of an emergency cesarean section.

What Is a Magnet Hospital

A magnet hospital is one with a Magnet Recognition Program. The American Nurses Credentialing Center operates the recognition program. It was in 1993 that the Magnet Recognition Program became a reality.

Hospitals all over the country desire to have the honor of being a Magnet organization. Only a select few hospitals have ever been able to achieve the status symbol.

Once a hospital achieves Magnet status, highly trained nurses will come seeking employment. Nurses love the idea of working with a team that provides top of the line medical service.

A hospital can achieve the Magnet status by following a strict set of criteria. Here are a few of the requirements hospitals have to meet:

  • A higher percentage of happy registered nurses
  • Low turn over for registered nurses
  • High patient satisfaction
  • Nurses ability to work independently

It can take years for a hospital to receive their accreditation. Usually, it takes around 4.25 years to complete the entire approval process. As of today, only about 8% of hospitals qualify a Magnet accreditation.

Degree Requirements for Nurses

If you want to work at a Magnet hospital, you don’t have to have a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). However, Magnet programs are always striving to increase their staff’s education.

What’s your current highest level of education?

Your current GPA, experience, and tuition budget will help determine how you can further your career. Even if you only have a non-nursing Bachelors, you still qualify for specialty medical degree programs.

Magnet organizations are trying to reach at least 80% BSN holding nurses by 2020. With a higher level of educated staff, the hospital will be able to meet the other Magnet requirements.

Not only is a BSN a great tool for nurses, but other specialty degrees or certifications can also help too. If you want to work with a Magnet organization, consider getting a degree that will further your current education.

One great option is to receive specialization to work specifically in ICU. By furthering their education, nurses are able to handle more diverse situations. For example, nurses working in ICU are constantly helping patients with acute and chronic pain.

With a thorough education, nurses will feel comfortable tailoring different care practices.

Quality of Leadership

In total, there are 14 qualifying factors for a hospital to achieve Magnet status. When you have the proper education, you’ll be able to help lead in the workplace. You’ll at least need a Bachelor’s degree to hold any type of management position.

The strict guidelines in the Magnet program help provide excellence among all staff members. Quality of leadership is one of the most important criteria the program sets forth.

Without proper organization, nurses can hurt themselves or their patients. Things have been continually changing when it comes to hospital organization. It used to be that nurses were in separate departments, and each department had a strong nurse representative.

Employers are finding the need to embrace new technology to help with organization. Now nurses can communicate with other nurses and supervisors. They no longer have to rely on their department representative to provide every update.

What Does Magnet Status Mean for Nurses?

Many of the Magnet program’s strict education rules are to improve safety. Nurses that work with Magnet organizations have fewer injuries on the job. Surveys show that not only are nurses safer, but they’re also happier too.

A survey took place using nurses in Magnet organizations and nurses in regular hospitals. In total, 2,323 nurses in 68 different hospitals were able to express their job satisfaction.

The numbers clearly show that nurses in Magnet organizations are happier. The nurses in Magnet organizations also claim to feel important and valuable to their team.
